Explanation of Charges


Tuition is composed of two components, regular tuition and campus-based (campus initiated) tuition. The regular tuition portion is determined by the UNC Board of Governors. The campus-based portion is requested by the various campuses, within parameters set by the BOG, depending on their individual circumstances. The campus-based requests must be approved by the UNC BOG. The regular and campus-based tuition requests must then be approved by the legislature.

Health Services Fee

The Health Service Fee funds the operating expenses for Student Health Services.


This fee supports UNC system-level organization that champion the concerns of students and ensures the affordability and accessibility to quality education today and tomorrow.

Ed & Tech Fee

The Education and Technology fee helps fund upgrades for classroom equipment, equipment needs for Information Technology Services, computer labs and instructional labs.

Athletic Fee

This fee provides operating support for the university's athletic department and programs. The Marching Band fee of $5 is also included here. This provides support for equipment and uniform purchases.

Student Activity Fee - Educational, Recreational and Renewable Energy Initiative

The Educational and Recreational Fee funds activities for a variety of student activities, such as the Student Government Association, student publications, multicultural student development and education, organizational leadership education, university recreation and other student services. The Renewable Energy Fee funds on-campus renewable energy projects recommended by the Renewable Energy Initiative Committee.

Student Activity Fee - Cultural Affairs

The Cultural Affairs Fee helps fund the Performing Arts Series, the Visual Arts Center, and Auditorium Technical Services.

Student Activity Fee - Student Union Operations

The Student Union Fee funds the operating expenses for the Student Union.

Retirement of Debt - Athletics Facilities

This fee supports the debt service for the athletics facilities enhancement project. This project included the women's softball field, replacement of the synthetic playing surface on the football field, an upgrade of the track and field facilities at Kidd Brewer Stadium and construction of a new field house to provide expanded and upgraded training, meeting, office and support facilities.

Retirement of Debt - Dining Facility

This fee supports the debt service for the Central Dining Hall. The Central Dining Hall is home to both the Rivers Street Cafe and Sanford Commons.

Retirement of Debt - Student Recreation Center

This fee supports the debt service for the student recreation center. It includes a swimming pool, weight training and exercise rooms, basketball courts, a climbing wall, a jogging track, a sports club, gym and space for the Office of Outdoor Programs.

Retirement of Debt - Student Union Addition

The Student Union addition project is for additional facilities needed in the Plemmons Student Union to offer value-added experiential and academic learning experiences to high-achieving Appalachian students. Five existing Academic Affairs and Student Development departments will be co-located in the addition to provide collaborative opportunities in a highly visible and easily accessible central campus location.

Retirement of Debt - Leadership Annex

This fee funds the debt service for the construction of an 18,202 square foot building devoted to student leadership programs.

Retirement of Debt - Infrastructure Improvements

This fee supports the debt service for renovations to existing academic space needed for classrooms to handle recent growth.

Transportation Fee

This fee provides support for the Appalcart transportation system and also for Mountaineer Safe Ride.

Book Rental Fee

This fee supports the bookstore book rental program.
