Beginning Fall 2021, App State will begin billing tuition on a per-credit hour basis.
Tuition will be assessed at per-credit-hour rates beginning Fall 2021 for:
- All incoming students, including transfer students, entering the university in Fall 2021
- Continuing students who are not currently in the NC Fixed Tuition program
- Tuition will be capped at the per semester, full-time enrollment levels of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours for graduate
This per-credit hour tuition program is a University of North Carolina System-wide initiative, effective for all UNC System schools beginning Fall 2021. Per-credit hour tuition program provides an equitable model whereby students will be charged the tuition rates for the exact credit hours in which they are enrolled.
What is changing?
- Tuition rates, including tuition increments, will be assessed based on each credit hour for which you are enrolled beginning with Fall 2021 tuition. This is a change from the “stair-step” levels, which is based on a range of hours.
- This rate change applies to tuition only (not fees).
- The per-credit hour assessment applies to all new students entering the university beginning Fall 2021 and continuing students not currently in the NC Fixed Tuition program.

- Tuition will be capped at the per semester, full-time enrollment levels of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours for graduate
- Mandatory Fees will be assessed at a stair-step method for Main Campus.
- Financial Aid offers will not be affected by the per-credit hour tuition change.
- Fixed tuition cohorts (2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021) will be charged tuition at their respective cohort rates based on the credit grouping category.
How will this affect what I am charged for tuition at App State?
- If you are an incoming freshman or incoming transfer student entering App State in Fall 2021 or after, your tuition will be assessed on a per credit hour basis.
- If you are a continuing student and not part of the NC Fixed Tuition program, your tuition will be assessed on a per credit hour basis.
- If you are a continuing student in the NC Fixed Tuition program, your tuition will continue to be assessed the same as before (on a stair-step method) during your 8 consecutive semesters of enrollment.
