Archive of Tuition and Fee Schedules
As a member institution of the UNC System, Appalachian State University’s methods of calculation and rates of tuition and course related fees must be approved by the UNC Board of Governors. Miscellaneous service charges are approved at the campus level by the chancellor.
Tuition
As required by the UNC Board of Governors, all students will be charged tuition on a per credit hour basis using the approved annual rate divided by 24 for undergraduate students and 18 for graduate students. The exception for students that are part of a Fixed Tuition Cohort per North Carolina General Statute 116-143.9.
Fees: Boone/Hickory - Fall/Spring
Students enrolled in a Main Campus program (Boone or Hickory) are assessed Main Campus Fees. These fees are required—they are not optional—even if a student does not utilize the associated campus services.
Note: The only fee that a student may opt out of is the Book Rental Fee. To opt out, students must contact the Campus Bookstore before the published deadline. Visit the Textbook Rental Program site or call 828-262-3070 for more information.
Students in a Main Campus program will be assessed the Main Campus fee schedule for all courses, including any that are online or held off-site.
If you're unsure about the campus type of your program or course:
- Undergraduate students should consult their academic advisor or the Registrar's Office.
- Graduate students should consult the Office of Graduate Studies.
Once tuition and fees are charged, the Office of Student Accounts can help explain the charges. However, they do not determine campus type designations—those are set by individual colleges or programs. For questions about why a course is listed as App State Online or Main Campus, please contact your academic department or App State Online.
Fees: App State Online - Fall/Spring
Fees for App State Online programs are assessed based on your student level (undergraduate or graduate) and your program designation. These fees are approved by the UNC Board of Governors. Miscellaneous fees are approved by the Chancellor and may be pending final approval at the time the tuition and fee schedule is published.
App State Online Programs
Students enrolled in a program officially designated as App State Online will be billed according to App State Online rates, regardless of how or where the course is delivered—including off-site or in-person formats.
Important: Enrollment in an App State Online program does not include access to all main campus services, as Main Campus Fees are not assessed.
Students enrolled in App State Online programs who would like access to Student Health Services may opt in to the Health Services Access Fee.
This fee is charged at the full-time rate, regardless of credit hours enrolled.
To opt in, contact the Office of Student Accounts.
Not Sure About Your Program Type?
Undergraduate students: contact your academic advisor or the Registrar’s Office
Graduate students: contact the Graduate Studies Office
The Office of Student Accounts can help explain charges after they are posted to your account. However, they do not determine a course’s campus type. For questions about why a course is coded as Main Campus or App State Online, please reach out to your academic department or the App State Online Office.
Tuition and Fees: Summer Sessions
Tuition and fees for Summer Session are charged per session hour and per term—meaning Summer Session 1 and Summer Session 2 are billed separately.
Compared to the fall and spring semesters, fewer fees are assessed during the summer.
Summer tuition and fees are based on:
- Your program type (Boone/Hickory Campus or App State Online)
- Your residency status (in-state or out-of-state)
Note: Charges are determined by your program designation, not the delivery method of your courses. For example, if you're in a Boone/Hickory Campus program, you'll be charged Main Campus rates—even if your summer courses are fully online.
App State Use of Tuition Statement
